Others are a reflection of what you are

If you look in the mirror and you don’t like what you see, do you blame the mirror or do you think you ought to do something to yourself to make yourself look better? Of course, you don’t blame the mirror. The mirror merely reflects your own self. You smile and the person in the mirror smiles back at you. You cry and the other person in the mirror cries too. Other people are like your mirror. They send back to you what you send to them.

Your facial expressions are likely to attract similar facial appearances from other people. When you smile, there’s a strong probability that other people will smile back. If you present a hostile look, others respond with hostility. If you display enthusiasm, liking or interest in someone, they usually show similar feelings for you.

If you are an optimistic person, chances are you look forward to a social gathering such as a birthday party, which you have been invited, with the positive attitude that you are going to enjoy yourself meeting new and interesting people. Sure enough, optimistic expectations are self-fulfilling and your friendliness and sociability draw other people towards you at the party. Their friendliness and genuine willingness to engage readily with you reflect your very nature.

If, on the other hand, you are a naturally shy person, you are very likely to be shy with people you don’t know. You feel nervous and uncomfortable with other people. At the party, you seem rather aloof to other people when in fact you are just shy. When others find you aloof and unfriendly, they respond in similar manner. You probably leave the party thinking the people there are not friendly when all you have to do is being open and interested in others.

When problems occur in a relationship, usually both sides are responsible. However, each party sees only the fault of the other person, thus absolving his or her own self of any responsibility, and lays the blame on the other. Likewise, a person who thinks other people are difficult invariably has no self-awareness that he or she is in fact a difficult, if not the most difficult, person. They blame others and complain about others’ behaviour.

Do not do to others what you do not want them do to you, so stop blaming the mirror which unfortunately to many people is something extremely hard to do.
